Rockstar Games invited GTANet and other Grand Theft Auto fansites to New York City last week to experience Grand Theft Auto Online firsthand. The event took place at the Hotel on Rivington in Manhattan's Lower East Side neighbourhood. (This is the same venue where we had our first look at GTAIV in 2008.)
As pretty much everyone knows, GTA Online launches tomorrow (October 1st). Access is free for anyone with a copy of Grand Theft Auto V.
The Rockstar team made it very clear to us that GTA Online is not just a 'multiplayer mode' for Grand Theft Auto V - it's an entirely standalone experience.
Yes, you can access Online through the character select wheel in V, and yes, GTA Online takes place in Los Santos & Blaine County. But once you get into the thick of things, e.g. tackling missions with your friends or gunning through deathmatch-style competitions, it feels like that familiar GTAV setting is intended to act as a set of training wheels to get you off to a quick start.
While everyone's busy exploring and enjoying the game, R* provided us with some interesting tidbits on the much anticipated Grand Theft Auto Online, out by October 1st. Here's what they had to say:
R* also encourages everyone to report any feedback, opinions and thoughts on GTAO come October 1st to tune and finesse the game. Make sure to check their newswire post to find out where to contact R* for your feedback.
From launch, up to 16 players can enter the world together to partake in everything from Open-World Crime and Chaos, Jobs, Races, Sports, Customization, Reputation and Cash Flow and of course Growing Pains - crashes and bugs. Again check out R*'s newswire to read about all of the features in detail.
Lastly, R* have several content updates planned to be released a few weeks after GTA Online, which include [but not limited to]:

Yes, the day has finally come!
Whether you've been playing since midnight or still waiting for your copy, September 17th has arrived around the world and GTAV is now available.
It's been a long journey since GTA IV, with mixed emotions of excitement, anticipation and sometimes frustration, but we can't thank you enough for joining us along the way and supporting the GTA Network, and that goes for you too, Rockstar.
BUT, this is not a goodbye speech, there is still PLENTY more to come from us. No one can deny the depth of GTAV, and as every fan gets their hands on their copy and dives into the world of Los Santos and Blaine County, there's a wealth of information to learn and experiences to have, and we've still got GTA Online to come in around 2 weeks time!
If you've got any questions or something to discuss (if you can pry yourself away from the game, that is) we've opened up some additional subforums over on GTAForums, where you can get mission help, cheats and report any bugs. Rest assured that there will also be plenty of indepth info and guides published on GTAV.net very shortly!
In the mean time:
Rockstar have announced there they will be two GTAV companion apps available, for free!
Released for iOS devices today and coming shortly to Android, the iFruit app features apps (appception?) connected to the in-game world using your Social Club login.
Secondly is the Grand Theft Auto V Manual. It features a "massive" 100+ page digital booklet that appears to have replaced the traditional paper "tourist" manual that comes in the game case, according to the Newswire.
It'll be releasing a little later, presumably from release day, on iOS, Android and PC/Mac! Rockstar have given a little sneak peak of what's inside.
The first official reviews have debuted this afternoon, 1 day before release, from gaming sites around the world. It's safe to say that GTAV has wiped the floor and then some, with top ratings across the board and a Metacritic score of 98.
No other world in video games comes close to this in size or scope, and there is sharp intelligence behind its sense of humour and gift for mayhem.
- IGN, 10/10
It also raises the bar for open-world mission design in a big way and has one of the most beautiful, lively, diverse and stimulating worlds ever seen in a game.
- Gamespot, 9.0/10
That's GTA V at its best - excelling at what you thought GTAs were supposed to do, while heading for the next impossibly high peak.
- Kotaku, Yes!
The world is breathtaking, the script is funny, the music is superb and, most of all, it's really, really fun.
- CVG, 10/10
